DUNEDIN ELECTION PETITION.
THE MISSING PAPERS. Per Press Association. Dunedin, January 6. For some days past Chief Detectives Herbert and Mcllveney have been making inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the mystery of the seventeen missing ballot papers; which disappeared after the official recount on the second ballot in Dunedin. Last night all the persons engaged in connection with the recount met in Mr D. Larnach’s (Returning Officer) office, the two detectives in question being present. The document which is alleged to 1 have been communicated to one of the candidates was produced, and , gave rise to a considerable amount of discussion and explanation by some of those present. It is said that the officials concerned in the in- , quiry have satisfied themsevles as to , how, when, and by whom the appers wore abstracted. The detectives engaged will report the result of their inquiries to the Government.
