One of Carter's eyes was wholly useless, while the other afforded him only slight use. As there was no evidence of disease in, the .eyes themselves, Dr. Sohell decided that the trouble lay in the brain, particularly as Carter suffered excruciating headaches. The operation consisted. of opening the bcaikt by the removal of two tiny “buttons” at the base of the skull, and taking out a quantity of oerebro-spinal fluid to relieve the pressure on the optic nerve*?
