HUMOUR OF LARGE HATS.
Owing to the popularity of large' hats of “The Merry Widow” type, an extraordinary situation has created in the city of Exter. In consequence of the narrowness of some of the streets, the municipal tramcars are much smaller than in the majority of towns, and ladies with spreading headgear find it impossible to enter the cars. Realising the humour of the situation, some of the fair sex laugh heartily when they find they cannot enter without removing their bats; but, on the other hand, many women “are less philosophical, and look far from pleasant as they mount the staircase to the outside seats—often to the accompaniment of suppressed titters from fellow-passengers.
