TAIHAPE ATHLETIC CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING,

From Our Own Correspondent. The above sports were held as nsnal to-day '(New Year’s Day), this being the tenth annual meeting of the Olub. ! Each succeeding meeting appears always to eclipse the last, and to-day’s sports quite put previous meetings in the shade. The weather which had for some days previous been of a disappointing nature (aud right up to this morning was Jextremely doubtful) was beautiful; in fact, a more enjoyable day could nbt have been, if it had been got out of the box or made to order. The trains north and south were full, and the number of loaded traps and buggies from all parts of the district was quite exceptional, and when the attendance was at its best it was estimated that there were about 8000 people on the ground. The side shows were numerous and interesting, and the time between the events was not noticed. The ground was in good condition, and visitors who had not seen the oval before were lond in their appreciation of its pretty and picturesque situation. The secretary was very energetic, and attended to the general comfort of both visitors and competitors, aud in this he was ably assisted by his very capable and courteous assistant, Mr QeorgesCn. In fact, it would he a .hard matter to find a more capable pair of secretaries than Mr Bertram and his assistant, Mr Georgeson. The handicapper, Mr Ulic Shannon, gave every satisfaction, as did the local handicappers for district |and other local events, Messrs Simpson and J. P. Aldridge. Mi Bill, of Marton, was the judge of horse events, and his decisions were accepted with general satisfaction. The judging of Messrs B. Jones and F. Somerville gave every satisfaction. The Taihape Band was present and rendered, some very excellent selections and their efforts helped greatly to the success of, the meeting. This meeting has now become one of, if not, the principal meetings on this line, and is now vieing with Feilding for the post of supremacy, and with a few improvements another year Feilding may have to take second place.
