TREATMENT OF ABORIGINES.
FORGED LABOUR IN NEW GUINEA. :Per Press Association—Copyright. Received June-23, 10.30 p.m. London, Last Night. The Bishop of New Guinea, interviewed relative to the new labour ordinance, said that if forced labour -were only insisted on for necessary Government work there would be no objection, but the Government had no right to inaugurate compulsion in the interests of a handful of white settlers. Since the natives were not represented on the Papuan Council, it was impossible to say ■that the Government represented the native views. At the Pan-Anglican Congress the Bishops of Waipu and Grafton and Canon Groser, spoke on the Church’s responsibility towards aborigines. ' Mr Reunion remarked that one reason why conversions of natives in North Australia were not more suo/ylssful, was because the language was /in a constant state of dux and conyjverts were only able to instruct their rahwn tribe.
