In the presence of a gathering of 14,000, the Chicago Republican Convention adopted with acclamation the Roosevelt platform, including a modified form of the anti-iujnnction plank (which upholds the authority of the Courts). Another demands the strengthening of the Sherman anti-Trust law. A third recommends the revision of the tariff by a special session _of Congress immediately after the inauguration of the nest President. Workers are described as the most direct beneficiaries under the Protective system. The platform declares that the United States owns one fourth of the world’s wealth, and makes one-third of the modern manufactured products. When Mr Taft was proposed for the Presidency, there was a demonstration second only to that accorded to President Roosevelt. 702 voted for Mr Taft, 68 for Senator Knox, 68 for Mr Hughes (Governor of New York), 61 for Mr J. O. Cannon (Speaker of the House), 40 for Mr O. W. Fairbanks (President of the Senate). 25 for Senator Lafollette, 16 for Senator J. R. Foraker. The Pennsylvanians, amidst immense cheering, cast their votes for Roosevelt. Mr Taft’s nomination was more unanimous in the subsequent vote.
