AUTHOR AND WIFE.
DEFENDANT DECLARES HIS WIFE HAS BEEN HYPNOTISED. The matrimonial troubles of Gotlieb Watte Everth, an author, residing at 79, Rectory Lane, Tooting, were related to the Magistrate at the South-Western Court on the application by the wife, Henrietta Everth, for a judicial separation for the reason of alleged acts of cruelty. Mr Oswald Hanson supported the summons. Complainant said her husband had written and published a number of books in Germany, She saidj,that during the past six mouths her husband struck her with his fist, and shook her by the shoulders. He had, moreover, threatened her many times, once with a dog whip. Defendant, addressing the complainant as his darling, denied the allegations, though he admitted there had been some unpleasantness owing to his wife’s association with a gentleman possessing new ideas on religious subjects, and who had enlisted her iii the faith. She was constantly, he said, in the man's company, and he had, in fact, hypnotised her. Complainant admitted that she Thad interested herself in religous matters with him. Defendant: I understand the gentleman is instructing your solicitor’ —Yes, that is so. Mr De Grey: What religion is it?—Witness: Something between Unitarian and— Mr Oswald Hanson: Ic is spiritualism. Complainant said her husband was at one time on friendly terms with the gentleman referred to, and had visited the house at his wish. He, however, took exception to the calls being so frequent, and the gentleman had since visited the house about two or three times weekly. The summons was dismissed.
