POHANGINA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting was held ou Saturday. Present: Crs. 14. V\. . Brown (chairman). H. burne, F. Smith. K. \V. Oliver, G. 11. Handley, and. D. Howie. Or. Juckson wrote to say he was not well and was granted leave of absence. CORRESPONDENCE. ’ From Treasury, notifying that £lso..hadTieeu placed to account of Council, third advance on Apiti footpath loan, and £3OO first advance on Pohangina bridge loan. From -Palmerston Sash « Door 00., stating that tire Company had arranged to do the necessarv metalling near the Piripiri ford. •From F. O. Ross, stating that Mr J. Bruce would fence Denton’s Hill cutting if Council grant £5 towards the cost,—The Gouucil uecidod to fence dangerous place. .From O.’ F. Hart, for permission to erect fence on edge of road near Horopito creek. —Granted. From George Bnckman, Apiti, with claim on account of accident to his son, which happened from a blow of a stone on the boy’s 6ye while breaking a stone with the roadman’s hammer, The basis of the claim seems to be the failure of the roadman to order the hoy away. The Engineer was instructed to inquire into the matter, but the opinion generally vyas against acknowledging the claim. From Governor’s Reception Committee, Palmerston North, inviting Council to attend.—No action taken. From A. P. Coombs, on behalf of Ranmai School Committee, asking permission to take gravel from Council’s reserve.—Granted. From R, S. Rounthwaire, C.E., returning drawings, specifications, etc., in connection with the Pohangiua bridge, and asking for £SO on the London Ford plan. Seeing that the'plans drawn for this bridge • had not been acceptable to th© other local bodv, the Council appeared to think the charge too high rand decided to request particulars of the claim. From the River BdUrd Committee, re proposed Royal Commission. —It was resolved on the niotiou of the Chairman, seconded by Or. The whole of the rates: arrack for 1906-7, amounting. to £6508 2s 3d, and for 1907-8, amounting to £6148 7s sd, iiave all been collected. The amounts to be passed fnr payment were £331 6s 10d from general account and £146 Ss out of lean account. The bad places on Table Fiat road had’been repaired and a man had been put on to repair the road during the winter. It would be necessary to employ a man to keep the roaci in order between the Piripiri mill and the Fohangiaa river.—The report was adopted. GENERAL BUSINESS. L

On tuo motion of Crs. Handley— Oliver, it was resolved — That the County Engineer be authorised to employ any assistance lie requires to supervise The reconstruction of the Pohaugiua bridge. This concerns chiefly the inspection of the timber.

Ors. Oliver—Brown— That owing to the tenders for construction .of Finuis’ road being so much higlier than the Engineer s estimate, the latter be authorised to finish the work by day labour. Crs. Howie—Smith —■ .That Crs, Brown and 'Handley sign and seal the. contractJfor the erection of the Pohangina bridge. Crs. Brown—Oliver — That as the Maugaone and Pohangina Ridings are not included in the Pohangina bridge special rating district, the amounts of £7 10s and £5. being the Mangaone and Pohangiua Riding contributions towards the payment of interest on the bridge loan, be paid annually for the the bridge. Crs. Howie—Oliver— That the Engineer be directed _ to purchase a road grader; to interview the Palmerston North Sash & Door Company with regard to the metalling of the roads in the Awahou and Tamaki Ridings; to invite tenders for supply of 5 tons of chaff - and 3 tons oats for use of County horses. . Tlig Treasurer submitted estimates for the ensuiug~year which provided for a reduction ’of tlie debts of the Ridings from £llßl 7s 6d to £940 2s Bd, on a differential rate, the rate in the Awahou to he reduced from l%d in the £ to Id, and the Maugaone reduced from Id to %d, the rates in other Ridings to remain the same. The estimates were adopted.
