From Onr Own Correspondent. A very interesting debate on “Are Private Monopolies Public Evils?” was held under the auspices of the Debating Society on Tuesday evening. Rev. J. McKenzie and. Dr. Gregory a poire for the whilst the affirmative was led by;M’f.' J. Mathews, seconded by J. Decker, On a vote being taken the latter were declared victors. Owing to inability to procure a lecturer for ndaffr. Thursday, it was decided to leaver the arrangements for the evening inthe hands of lady members. A pleasant surprise has been promised. Mr H. Varley, engine driver at Guy and Pnrueli’s mill met with a nasty accident on Wednesday, though the belting on the fly wheel snapping. He was considerably bruised about the head, chest a # nd lower regions of the body, necessitating a few stitches being inserted. In order to show their appreciation of.the splendid efforts pat fbrth by the ladies at the recent sale of work ■ the public hall committee tendered them a banquet on Friday evening. The tables were sumptuously laden and artistically decorated. .whilst the numerous toasts were heartily responded to. Sevefra'i cases of scarlet fever are reported.
