A PROFITABLE COW.
——* A remarkably profitable cow,, owned by a milk vendor in a Melbourne suburb, has lately been brought under the notice of the= ; chief veterinary suigeon of the Agricultural Deaprtment (Mr Cameron. M.R.0.Y.5.), says the Melbourne Argus, who has taken the trouble to subject the auimal’a_ milk to a test, in order to ascertain its butter-fat value, the large volume of' fluid the cow was yielding daily having suggested the probability of its being-poor in this respect. The owner of the cow bought her a few weeks ago for £2O 10s She is from , a purebred Ayrshire cow, and has, g milking Shorthorn blood in berms: veins. the strain being a well-nt established one. She is now in fnl"; profit, and so far her lowest yield f milk in one day has been 21 quart , her highest yield having been o>‘ quarts; the average is estimated io have been for the past three weeks-' about 22 quarts; and the test-'to which Mr Cameron referred to showed that it contained the equivalent of 4 per cent, of butter-fat.’ The animal is fed in the ordinary way—'that is, she receives the usual ration of bran and chaff twice a day, and green stuff or grass at intervals. Of course, the above record is good, but there is nothing exceptional about it.
