At Braybrook inquest the foreman of the loco depot gave evidence that the morning after the accident he asked Milburn how it occurred, and he replied that ths brake failed, adding “No one is to blame but myself, as the signals were against me.” Milburn admitted that the brakes during the journey to the accident worked beautifully.
