EGG-FARMING.

Slß,—Like “Small Farmer” I have been waiting to see what is going to be done in connection with this matter. I expected to see the columns of your paper inundated with letters containing advice, hints, directions, and what not, but “Small Farmer” is the first to get going, and that nearly a fortnight after your article appeared. I believe that the thing has great possibilities if properly worked. I do not think it is a matter for a company with a large capital as the business would probably take some years to grow to sufficient dimensions to warrant it. As ’“Small Farmer” suggests, a man with a horse and cart and a place close to the railway station, could do better. A company might be formed later on if so desired, to acquire his business. I notice in the last issue of the New Zealand Poultry Journal a copy of the prospectus of the Canterbury Co-operative Egg, Poultry, and Produce Company, _ which is commencing with a capital of £30,000. Of course, Christchurch is a very much bigger place than this, and could stand a corujiany with a capital of that size particularly when one of their is to acquire a large aud long established auctioneering business. That, however. is apart.from the question,_ but some of the information obtained from the manager of the Auckland Egg and Poultry Company, aud published in the Prospectus, may be interesting :—The Auckland Company started with thirty suppliers; during their first mouth of business they received no poultry, but about twenty thousand dozen _ eggs. During one of the best months'of the season just gone they received 48,000 dozen eggs and 3000 head of poultry; they have now 1000 suppliers with seven employees in the Company and fourteen in tne' grading depot. Eggs are bought and - sold by the dozen aud poultry by the pound. As far as I know there is nothing of the kind in Wellington, so that if someone will take his courage in both hands and start I reckon he will ,be on to a good thine.—l am, etc., ORPINGTON.
