A NARROW ESCAPE.
OAB CRUSHED BY A TRAM OAR. Press Association. Auckland, Juno 8. Four occupants of a cab had a miraculous escape from serious injury in Queen Street yesterday afternoon. The party consisted of G. H. Barnes, manager of Meyuell, Gun & Go., Mrs Barnes, A. Yerne and J. Talbot, representative of Kubelik, the violinist. Opposite Durham street the driver (Smyth) allowing the up car to pass him endeavoured to cross to the opposite side of the road. Just as the cab was broadside on another car collided with the vehicle aud’erushed it like an eggshell against one of the heavy- tramwav poles. The motormau applied the' emergency brake, otherwise it is almost certain that no member of the party would have escaped serious, perhaps fatal, injury. As it was A. Verne was slightly bruised on one leg. Smyth jumped off the box seat for his life and the horses were quickly out of harm’s way. Those inside emerged from the wreckage without loss of time, Mrs Barue’s safety being first assured. The property of Smyth and Herbert was damaged almost beyond hope of repair.
