LADIES' COLLEGE TRAGEDY.
DAUGHTER SHOT BY HER FATHER.
New York, April 16. A tragedy which has caused intense consternation and grief among three hundred lady students of a leading college in North Carolina resulted yesterday from the insensate rage of a father on the refusal of his daughter to listen to paternal admonitions. Miss Nellie Sweeney, the prettiest student at the Normal and Collegiate Institute, had been receiving the attentions of a number of young men to whom her father, a well-known doctor in New York, objected. Yesterday Dr. Sweeney called on his daughter, who v/as seated at a piano in one of the reception rooms as lie entered. He remonstrated with her on her conduct, but she, instead of paying heed, continued playing. The enraged doctor pulled out a revolver and fired three shots, wounding her mortally. He then turned the weapon on himself and sent a bullet into his brain as scores of lady students, attracted by the cries of the terribly injured girl, came rushing in. Miss Sweeney is mourned by all, for she, in spite of her great beauty, v/as the most popular girl in the ■college. The body of Dr Sweeney was removed to Marion, North Carolina, where he owned considerable property.
