THE IONIC FIRE.
Per Press Association. Wellington, June 2.
Giving evidence before the Commission appointed to inquire into the fire which recently occurred on the lonic, Captain Monro, ■wharfinger, said the features of the Turakiua and lonic fires were identical, but he would not say they were attributable to spontaneous .combustion. He thought the lonic fire was caused by a bale or bales of flax coming in contact with the fire, but how he did not know. He added that the greatest difficulty was experienced in kepeing the public who were smoking away from the tow and flax which were being loaded. He had never seen matches in a ship’s hold though it was possible of course tfrat thdy might get there. »
