SHOOTING.

SECOND EDITION.

THE EAST LONDON SCORE.

Per Press Association

Wanganui, Juno 3. Colonel Somerville writes to tb© Herald questioning tire bona fides of the East London Rifle Club’s phenomenal score of 834 in The Empire match. He says that from long experience in rifle shooting and knowledge what can be done with the .303 rifle a score of 824 under Sisley conditions is practically impossible. H? points out that the best score ever made at Bisley under Ithe same conditions was 779~in 1903“ and the next best 771, but recognises that were by eight selected men. The Colonel adds that in 1905 for example about 3500 shot in the first stage of the King’s Prize at Bisley and the eight highest scorers only made 814. The Herald, commenting on the letter, says that the atmosphere in South Africa being very dry and singularly free from refraction shows all objects with remarkable clearness and suggests that this may account for the truly phenomenal score.
