Per Press Association. Auckland, May 22,

At the Supreme Court to-day, Frederick Summe/s and Jones were indicted on a charge of stealing from the s.s. Waikare, on May Ist, a suit of clothes, a watch and chain, and 7s 6d in money, the property of the master of the vessel, Captain Burnett. The jury, after a short retirement, found Summers guilty of theft, and Jones guilty of receiving the stolen property knowing it to have been stolen. Both prisoners were sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment with hard labour, William Doyle pleaded guilty to a charge of being an incorrigible rogue and vagabond, and was remanded foriseutence. William Brown, on a similar charge was found guilty and also remanded. At the Police Court this afternoon Michael Hayden, on a charge of wife-beating was sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour.

Ac the Supreme Court to-day Henry Herbert, a Maori convicted of stealing a portmanteau, was sentenced to three, years with hard labour; Obas. Edgecumbe and Daniel Munro, charged with aiding and abetting a man named Walker in forging and uttering a cheque, were found not guilty and discharged ; Edward Kirby, a miner, of Waihi, found guilty of assaulting a little girl, was remanded for sentence. Christchurch, May 21, At the Supreme Court to-day James' Thompson was sentenced to two years imprisonment for attempting to set fire to the Cafe de Paris Hotel building on February 18th. The Crown prosecutor said there was grave reason to believe the accused was concerned in other attempts at fire raising which occurred the same night. David Why took, a middle-aged man, was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for indecent assault. George R. Fleming was acquitted on a charge of perjury.
