MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Special meeting held Wednesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr J. McEldowney), Crs. Hilton, Lyon and Bredin. The special order levying a special rate on re-payment oi loan of £IOOO gas extension was confirmed. The Mayor, Ors. Lyon and Bredin were appointed to witness the Council’s seal for loan and sign same. James Morton wrote, asking that water be laid on his premises on Tutaeuui road. —Resolved (Ors. Hilton—Bredin) That application be granted under the usual conditions on payment of fee of £3 per year. The Committee appointed to inquire into Dr. Crawford’s account for professional services rendered to H. F. Oldham who met with an accident while in Council’s employ, recommended Council not to recognise any liability in the matter. —This course was adopted. The Captain of the Salvation Army, Marton, forwarded jiuvitations to the Mayor and Councillors to attend a banquet at Marton next week, which were accetped. The Finance Committee having gone through the estimates they were passed and approved of. It was resolved (The Mayor —Or. Bredin) That it is the intention of Council to make and levy a general rate of 2s in the £, a library rate of a Id and a special rate of lOd on all rateable property wifcbiu|the Borough of Marton on the basis of the annual value for year 1908-9. The following Standing Committees were approved -.—Finance: Crs. Lyon, Sutcliffe and Works and Water; Crs. Gould, Sutcliffe and Gibbons ; Gas : Crs. Gibbons, Lyon and Bredin ; Hall; Ors. Bredin and Gibbons; Park: Ors. Hilton, Lyon and Bredin ; Library : Ors. Gould, Sutcliffe and Lyon; Cemetery : Crs. Sutcliffe and Gould ; Fire pßrigade: Crs. Hilton, Gould and Gibbous. The Mayor to be chairman of all committees. _ Following recommendations of Gas Committee were adopted :—That subject to satisfactory prices being obtained from and satisfactory a.' - rangemeuts being made with Marton plumbers, the Gas Committee recommends that from Ist July next the Council dispense with the gas-fitting department altogether. That prices be obtained from Marton plumbers to make connections from the gas mains dud fix meters when the gas manager is unable to spare the time. That prices be obtained at per foot for laying the various gas pipes required and also fixing of same in position to houses. That no credit be given for small quantities of tar and coke, less than 4s 6d in value.

That all ‘goods and materials required for gas works be ordered through the office. That under the new arrangements it will be the duty of the gas manager to attend to all complaints re gas lamps, stoves and fittings. That all complaints concerning the gas and gas fittings be made direct by consumers to the Town Clerk. ‘That in engaging further employees for the gas works preference be given to any present employees who may be affected by these resolutions of re-organisation.
