HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT Press Association. Wellington, May 18. The following is the High Commissioner’s cable dated i-iOiidon, May 16th:— , „ The mutton market is very dull, except for prime light weight Canterbury brands, which are getting very scarce, with a brisic demand. Canterbury mutton 4d and North Island 3%d. There is a good demand for prime quality lamb, but there are complaints with regard to the quality of New Zealand brands this season. A dull sale for all lamb of inferior quality. Canterbury brands s>£d and other than Canterbury s^d. The beef market is weak, New Zealand beef being pushed for sale. Hind quarters 3-%d, forequarters 3d. The butter market is quiet, with a tendency in favour of buyers. European supplies are increasing. Choicest New Zealand 110 s, Danish Ills, Australian 1045,. Siberian 104 s per cwt. . . , The cheese market is quiet and small business is doing. Prices are irregular, white makes being quoted at 595, and coloured at 58s per cwt. The hemp market is very quiet with nothing doing and prospects are uncertain. Following are current quotations: Good fair grade on spot £25 10s, fair grade jon spot £24 10s, fair current Manila £24 10s. MayJuly shipments are quoted as follows : Good fair grade £25 15s, fair grade £24 10s, fair current Manila £24 10s. ... , There is no alteration in the cocksfoot seed market since last week. The wool market has recovered and values are equal to closing rates at last sale.
STOCK REPORT. Messrs Freeman R. Jackson & Co , report:—At onr Wanganui stock sale on Wednesday, 13th inst., we yarded 250 mixed cattle, 4,000 sheep and 130 pigs. The attendance was good and bidding free throughout. All the sheep yarded, with the exception of four pens found ready purchasers, mostly at auction. Cattle sold at late rates. A full entry of pigs sold well. We quote :—Light fat;cows £4 7s 6d to £4 10s, others £3 15s to £4 Is, fat and forward cows £2 35s to £3 6s 6d, store cows 30s to 41s, 18month to 2-year steers £2 15s to £2 17s 6d 2 to steers £3 15s, 15 to 18-month steers £2 to £2 7s, 3-year steers £3 19s 6d, cows and calves £2 10s good springing cows £5 12s 6d J;o £6 10s medium do. £3 10s to £5 os, others £2 10s to £3 mixed weaners 10s, heavy fat ewes 14s 10d, fat ewes 12s 6d, medium do. 10s lid, fat wethers 17s, 4-tooth forward wethers 13s to 13s 4d, medium do. 12s Id, good 2-tooth wethers 11s 5d to 11s 7d, small do. 8s 6d to 9s, others 4s to 7s, empty ewes 5s to 5s 9d, medium do. 4s Id to 4s 6d, 4, 6 and x.m. ewes in lamb 5s 2d to 7s, mixed lambs 6s 5d to 6s 9d, others 5s lid, fat and forward lambs 9s.
