Mr William le Quez, Consul for the Republic of San Mariuo, states that Dr. Menetto Bouelli and Dr. Gustavo Babboni have been elected Captains-Regenc. This mighty Republic—which is still, by the way, officially at war with Austria —covers twenty-three square miles of a mountain.

Mrs Howard Gould, who was better known as Miss Catherine Clements, the actress, has offered to share her wealth with her sister, who married a Chinaman named Wong Sung Yue eight years ago, if she will leave her husband. Wong Sung is now ill and penniless, and Mrs Yue has replied that she is grateful for the offer, but would rather starve than desert her husband.

After remarking that he was going off his head, John Hards, a farm •bailiff, of Burstow, Surrey, kissed his wife and said “Good-bye.” Shortly afterwards he went raving mad. Hearing screams, aMr Moulder, who had apartments at the farm, went into the kitchen and found Mrs Hards, struggling with her husband for the possession of a gun. After a severe struggle Moulder secured the weapon. Hards, however, got free, and subsequently shot himself dead. At the inquest a verdict of suicide during temporary insanity was returned. Wilhelm Sidorowiez, an ex-lieuten-ant in the Austrian army, has broughtjau action against the War Office, claiming £3OOO damages, £SOOO expenses, and a pension of £175 a year for injuries which incapacitated him, received in fighting a duel at the command of his superior officer.
