HIGHWAY ROBBERS.
STRANGE SCENES IN CHRISTCHURCH. Per Press Association. Christchurch, May 18. Between midnight on Saturday and Sunday morning a gang of three men on bikes, two armed with revolvers, rode along Fitzgerald Avenue, holding up every pedestrian likely to possess valuables. The first znau met was hit on the head with, the butt of a revolver, his hat waa smashed in, and £2 in cash taken. The next man fought with an umbrella, but finally was relieved of £4 and his purse. A policeman came on the scene here, but the victim having been threatened that his brains would be blown .out if 6 he said a word, made no complaint to the policeman. The next man set upon attempted to bolt, but was brought to a standstill by _ a revolver bullet, which grazed his hand. He was relieved of 17s 6d in cash and a gold watch and chain. The next atempt was on* a young man named Morey, who bolted, being near his own home and he got inside the gate, but was fired at, the bullet going through his coat and greatcoat and grazing one finger. iM SOME ARRESTS. * The police arrested three men at Sumner at noon, roughly answering the description of the men concerned in Saturday night’s outrage. All three are suspicions characters, and have been under police surveillance for some days. When arrested all were found armed with revolvers. _
