Ornppi and Sir Edward Grey have commenced the preliminary discussion of an Anglo-French Commercial Treaty. Constantinople, May 17. A large band of Albanian brigands raided the Turkish port, Banti Quarauta, and looted the Italian and Greek shipping agencies, post office, and chief places of business, wounding several persons. Panic prevails in the town. Received May 18, 10.5 a.m. Sydney, May 18. The crew of the barque Bjorne, wrecked on Surprise Island, have arrived at Sydney. Mr James, with three ladies were snowed up in a motor car at Kiandra. They had a terrible experience before with the assistance of another car they got out of the mountains. Tourists from Noumea state that petitions asking New Caledonia he ceded to Britain are being largely signed, and will shortly be forwarded to the French Government. The Herald’s special correspondent at Papua, gives a graphic description of the experience of a small expedition sent to'puuish the Ukiaravi tribe for attacking two white traders. Fifteenjhnndred nativesgattacked the expedition. Four of the Government force were wounded. After two natives had been killed and three wounded the remainder fled into the bush. Several natives were handed over, but the ringleaders in the attack escaped. Melbourne, May 18. It is stated that Mr Deakin will resign after the visit of the American fleet and the installation of the new Governor-General. Steamers have returned after another unsuccessful search for the Orion. It is considered that there is little hope she is afloat. Perth, May 18. A pearling lugger disabled in the late cyclone has been towed into Broome with thejjdead bodies of two of the Asiatic crew aboard.
