IN BANKRUPTCY

A meeting of creditors in the estate of: Mrs Alice Peters, storekeeper, of Halcombe, was held at FeUding yesterday. Mr Scott, D.0.A., presided. The following creditors were present' or represented Messrs A. H. Sutton and Co., G. J. Harford, Purkiss and Son, S. Marston, F. F. Haggitt, Barraud and Abraham, and J. Kingsbeer.

The statement of the bankrupt was as followsl started business in Halcom.be ‘on October 21st, 1907, with a capital of £l5O, and I had chattels worth £IOO. The latter were mortgaged to Mr Haggitt for £4O. I bought stock from Messrs Barraud and Abraham, and Mr Poole, of Wanganui, £BO worth from the former and £25 worth from the latter. I paid half cash to Mr Poole and made a small payment on account to Barraud and Abraham. I bought the property at Halcombe from T. H. Bredin, Marton, for £350, deposit of £lO and £4O later. I improved the property to the extent of £l7 10s of which I paid £5 10s in cash. I borrowed further sums from Mr Haggitt, on the security of a bill of sale. The business paid expenses until the.last two months, when it fell away. I have been unwell for some time and unable to look after it. I employed my two sons at 10s per week, and I retained 80s per week for household expenses. Hatrick and Co. began to press me about two moutps ago, got a judgment against me and issued a distress warrant That was the only judgment against me, so I borrowed an additional £25 £rom Mr Haggitt to pay it. 1 btfZieved I should then be able to carry on but the business continued bad and I continued ill. Other creditors began to press so I bad no alternative but to file. The statement of assets and liabili-' ties showed liabilities to unsecured creditors amounting to £323 7s, and to secured creditors £4lO. The estimate value of the securities was £SBO and of stock £2OO. The D.O. A. stated that there would not he more than £IOO for the unsecured creditor.
