The House defeated two attempts to alter the flash point of kerosene, with a view to imposing a duty on kerosene. It therefore remains free.
It also disagreed with the request of the Senate to increase the duty on New Zeaiaud pine and red birch to one and sixpence. Mr Deakin announced that Govrenment had arranged to advertise for three months in the Standard’s new weekly supplement. Victoria and Westralia had associated themselves with the Commonwealth in the matter.. Unless Australia was always to remain in the background, advantage would have to be taken of opportunities like this. Mr Deakin promised to inquire into the statement that the Standard had instructed its Melbourne correspondent to cable all news via the Eastern Extension Company. Perth, May 15.
At biennial elections of one-third of the members of the Legislative Council, Labour was defeated in the south province, and though a few returns have still to come in, it looks as if no Labour member will be returned.
