FEILDING BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Council held a special meeting last night to consider the estimates and in what manner the channelling and other loan work should be carried out, whether in large or small contracts.

The estimated revenue from all sources, including a temporary advance from lean account, was £4370 19s 4d, of which £3593 19s 4d was from a rate of 3d in the £ on a" valuation 0f.£311,156 (unimproved).. It was proposed to expend £IOO3, in the payment of rent and purchase money for the South street reserve, £1039 in reduction of overdraft. The sum of £SOO was allocated to maintenance, £3OO for public lighting, £436 for interest, £3OO in proportion of salaries on the general rate, £l5O in fire prevention, £127 for charitable aid t and hospital dues. These were the chief items.

While the question of the division of thef, work iu contracts was being discussed, Cr. Darragh asked whether the schedule of works with the estimates provided for the expenditure of the loan money in hand and to be borrowed.

On receiving a reply in the affirmative he asked where it was proposed to obtain the money for the Ibig drain for which tenders had been invited. Cr. Bramwell said there was a large sum down for contingencies. Or. Darragh said it would be bad business to spend the amount allocated for contingencies before £the main work was started. It was decided that the concrete work of channelling and kerbing be divided into nine contracts and that tenderers be directed to give in separate prices for each street. It was decided that specifications be prepared as soon as jiossible for the first contract to include Kimbolton road and Fergussou street, and Warwick, King and Queen streets iu the second.

The Engineer stated it would take him about a mouth to prepare specifications. It was decided to lot the work of kerbing in those streets in which only kerbing was to be done iu one contract, also to let the tarring and sanding in one contract, ;and the sewerage reticulation in one contract.

The” Council approved of the proposed site for the baths and decided to let this work also in one contract. In the consideration of the estimates the estimate for maintenance was raised to £BSO, and it was concluded that probable expenditure in other items had been under estimated by about £450, and it was decided to estimate £350 as advance from loan money in place of £SOO. Consequently the amount by which the overdraft could be reduced had to be reduced accord iugly. The estimates were then provisionally adopted and a resolution passed to strike a 2d rate.
