TAIHAPE NOTES.
From Our Own Correspondent,
The first match of the season was played to-day on the Oval. The teams were Past v. Present. A good deal of interest was taken an the game as, apart from the fact tnat the losers were supposed to pay for a dinner in the evening, there was a good deal of speculation as to who . were to do battle for Taihape in the present season. The day was rough and a good deal of rain had fallen right up to the time of starting, in fact, it was not expected that a game would be playedgon account of the weather. But the elements were good for about two hours, and a good game ensued. When the teams got on the field, the condition of the “Old Boys” to looked “too big,” and it was that their stay would be short, but as events proved they made a determined stand. The Present got over the line iu the first spell, and the “dinner” did not look too promising for the “Old Boys.” Butin the second spell they quite held own, as from a penalty kick Todd potted a beautiful goal from a difficult angle which made things even, and the score was never altered. Thus the first game ended in a draw, each side paying for their own dinner which was held in the evening at the Gretna. The game was a good one and showed that Taihape will have a team this season that will require watching. I understand that the club will have two senior teams this season, which ought to make football very popular this season. A match Mataroa v. Taihape will be played on Saturday next at Taihape when a good game is expected. Rain set in here on Tuesday last ana the weather since has been very showery and wet though very mild and warm. The grass is better than has been seen so late in the season before, in fact the weather has been remarkable. The borough elections have been and gone. The Mayor has been installed and everything is now normal. The election of Mr Nathap for a further term in the civic chair has given very general satisfaction. The vote for town hall and muni-
cipal building was carried by a large majority, and we hope to see the work put in hand at no distant date. A a neighbouring town gavefus a visit yesterday and received sutiable accommodation at the hostel run by the Police Department. She was presented at Court this morning, and received the usual attention.
