MARTON OPERATIC SOCIETY.

At a well-attended meeting at Marton last evening, including a number of ladies, it was mously decided on the motion of ■ Mr R. Young, seconded by Mr A. E. Awdry to put on another opera in Marton on a date to fee subsequently fixed by the committee. Dr. Skerman, was in the chair, and spoke of the good work done by the Society in past years. They had a credit balance of £9 10s from the last opera, and this sum could be devoted towards putting on a new opera.

Mr Little said he had been approached by a number of people who were anxious to give their help in the production of another opera. The popular feeling was that the “Pirates of Penzance” should be staged, but it was better for the meeting to decide. He apologised for the unavoidable absence of the secretary (Mr S. J. Gibbons). It was suggested that the selection of the opera he left to Dr. Skerman and the opinion was expressed that members would work enthusiastically to produce any play he decided on.

Dr. Skerman thought it best for the meeting tc decide and it was finally agreed that the opera be either the “Yeomen of the Guard” or ‘ * Pirates. ” A vote of the meeting decided in favour of the latter. Mr A. Way was elected secretary vice Mr S. J Gibbons, resigned. Dr. Skerman was elected stage manager and Mr Bert Crozier conductor.

The Committee appointed were: Messrs R. Young, S. J. Gibbons, A. E. Awdry, W. L. Little, A. H. Sutcliffe, G. Barnett and conductor and stage manager ex officio. The members’ subscription was fixed at os and homsrary members at £1 Is, which includes two front seat tickets to all operas daring the year.

At a committee meeting held afterwards it was decided to cable to Melbourne for 40 copies of the score. The first practice night will be advert’sed.
