THE LOSS OF THE BEGA

At the Marine Court of Inquiry in connection with the foundering of the Bega, the master (Captain Bishop) gave evidence that the steamer had been recently overhauled at a cost of £3OOO. The vessel was in good condition, and well found. He could not account for the foundering nnless she had sprung a leak.
The Underwriters’ Association have been advised that the barque Italia has been wrecked at Valparaiso. She was bound from Newcastle tolquique, and was laden with coal. Received May 8, 10.20 a.m. Sydney, May 8. McOuhbin, Chief Engineer of the Bega, stated that he did not think the increase in the vessel’s list was due to water, but to the cargo. The Bega was a tender ship.
