THE BLACKBALL STRIKE.

MINERS SUMMONED,

Press Association

Greymouth, May 2. Summonses have been served on about 130 members of Blackball Union to appear before the Arbitration Court to show cause why they should not pay their proportion of the fine of £75 and costs. The Union held a meeting last night and drafted the following _ telegram which has been sent to Judge Sim, and' Messrs Brown and McCullough :—To-day summonses were served in duplicate one by the police in person and the other by the Post registered. As President of the Blackball Miners’ Union on behalf of myself and other members of the Union wo protest and object to an application made by the Inspector of Factories being heard at Auckland on Monday next, outside the Westland Industrial district, for an order directing the payment by the individual members of the Union of any portion of the fine of £75 levied on the Union. My , wish is to submit points showing that the Court has no jurisdiction to order individual members to pay any portion of the fine inflicted. _ The time allowed for appearing is insufficient and we cannot afford the expense of travelling there. Signed, H. J. Fox, President of Blackball Miners’ Union.

APPLICATION EXPLAINED. Per Press Association. Auckland, May 2. In connection with the Blackball strike, application is to be made to the Arbitration Court on Monday, to substitute an order against individual members of the Union for an order against the Union. Mr Mays, representing the Crown, said to-day that in all probability application would be made on behalf of the Labour Department to defer hearing the application a few days to give them an opportunity of perusing documents, and ascertaining the intention of the other side. Justice Sim asked if the workers would ba represented. Mr Mays replied that probably they would.
