COUNTESS AND A THIEF.
VEILED INTRUDER IN HOTEL CORRIDOR. Paris, March 6. In the small hours of Friday morning two mein bars of the Paris detective force captured a woman in the act of trying to pick the lock of the bedroom door of a wealthy American ; Rad his wife in a first-class hotel at Nice. -The woman was wearing a closefitting black jersey, short black petticoat and worsted stockings, and her face and, head were partly Covered with a thick black veil. She protested indignantly against her arrest, and described herself as the Countess tie Monteil, of No 3, Rue Gaillard, Paris. The detective declared that they knew her well and that _ her real name was Amolie Condemine, married to a gentleman of good reputation". They stated that they had been watching her closely for the last ten days atfcl [had caught* er red-handed. Moreover, on a search being made in her room at the hotel, some £l6O in gold and notes was discovered, together with over £BOO worth of jewellery and a complete set of beautifully made burglars’ tools, such as hotel thieves especially are in the habit of using. It appears that the police have long been suspicious of the woman, and had watched her from the very moment she left Pans. She visited her mother, who resides at Macon, and|then went on to Nice, where she put np at a first-class hotel. Very soon she drove back to tbe railway station with her baggage, which was deposited in the cloak-room, and went a few hours later to another first-class hotel. She was followed there by the detectives, with the result described'.
