OROUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting was held yesterday; Present; Crs. Wheeler (chairman), Pearce, Bowling, Vincent, Burrell. Cornfoot and Reid. The inward correspondence was dealt with as follows ; From Hospital & Charitable Aid Board, stating that the amount of Council’s contribution was £347 4s 10d and £3 10s towards infections disease hospital. From J. Shapleski, asking Council to refund him the wages of extra spreader, 10s per day.—To he paid. From H. M. Row, asking that culvert approach he made in trout of his 'gateway.—-Such applications never granted. From Agricultural Department, notifying that 201bs of poisoned pollard for rabbits had been forwarded.—To be distributed free of cost. . .

From Prior & Gillespie,, claiming ~on behalf of J. Evans, £2O on account of alleged damage to the ■ latter’s property through the opening of a gravel ; pit.— Disclaimed liability. ' Prom R. K. Bradbury, stating that it was the wish of the Halcombe residents to have the road to the Rangitikei river opened and asking whether the old one had been c } ose( i. _The old track was never a legal road and it was resolved that having provided a good road and right to use the railway bridge the Council does not deem it advisable . to provide another leading to a ford continually liable to change. From L. V. Hall, asking to be allowed to take a few loads of gravel from the Spar road pit.—Referred to Engineer. From O. J. D. Skinner, stating that he was acting for the Council in the case against Saxby, and he understood the Council would pay the solicitor’s fees.—Chairman to interview the solicitor in the case. From J. P. Jepson stating that straying cows and pigs were damaging drain on Taonui road. —Rangers to he instructed to impound at all hours.

From Superintendant of Electric Lines, forwarding bond in connection with proposed telephonic communication between Feilding and Stan way.—Bond to be signed. REPORTS. The Treasurer reported the various balances as follows :—Taonui dr. £322- 4s Bd, Makino cr. £664 Os 10d, Otangahi dr. £63 I4s sd, Hiwinui cr. £146 8s 3d, Mangaoue cr. £37 5s Id, Raugifcawa £lB 2s 3d, ’ Ran - manga cr. £528 10s 3d. General account: Rates levied £4822 9s 3d, collected £4760 lie 4d. Bank balances; General account or. £3069 19s sd, No. 21 loan account cr. £1421 16s 4d, office loau account cr. £224 15s, Gorge bridge account dr. £2918 Os 7d,

The Engineer recommended progress payments as follows : —£l23 3s 9d on contracts No. 13, £9l 13s 7d on No. 8, £28*133 93, on contract for metalling Feilding-Buuuythorpe road, £94 15s 6d on contracts No. 9 and 23. £124 14s 4d on No, 14, on No. 20 £63 10s, and £IOO on contract No. 3. The formation of Greenlow’s line had been completed and, the contractor paid. The work of regrading the hill on Reid’s line was almost completed and the regrading of the hill on Henaghan’s line at a cost of £l6 7b had been completed. The Engineer gave a preliminary estimate for forming and culverbing the road alongside the railway line between Makino and Halcombe. His estimate was £3IOB 10s, and to connect the cemetery road with Boddv’s road £I6BO.

Or/ Rowling said the work on Greenhow’s line had been badly carried out. Part of the work -yet needed to be crowned.

The Engineer said final payment would be held over until the work referred to had been clone. Soma comments were made as to the manner the contractor for that particular work was in the habit of finishing his contracts. In respect to r 'the estimates for the construction of the railway line road to Halcombe it was decided to provide the petitioners for this road with a copy of the estimates and ask them whether they are prepared to raise a loan to cany out the work. The report as a whole was adopted. OTHER BUSINESS. It was resolved — That a sab-committee, consisting of Crs. Pearce, Burrell, and the chairman be appointed to frame bylaws and report. That rangers be instructed to impound during the whole 24 hours, commencing on the Ist June. That the request of Messrs Fetch, Smith and Oakley re drain along Eimboltoc road from Hitchman’s property to Smith’s corner be granted, provided the above mentioned owners will relieve the Council of any responsibility in connection therewith. That Messrs Purkiss and Son be granted a renewal of slaughtering license. That the under-mentioned alterations be made to the rate roll: L. Lassen to Bunnythorpe Dairy Co., S. Gray to J. P. Cnrren, H. J. Wapp to H. Redmayne, W. O. Baker to E. A. Buchanan, F. and O. Koberstein to E. P. Mason, R. J. Wilson to O. Webb, F. T. Wildbore to H. Beard.

That .authority be given to repair the Ashhurst footpaths, and that the owners of properties on the main streets between the Commercial and Masonic Hotels aud the Post Office be informed that the Council will tar aud saud the footpaths provided they will pay half cost of same. The Engineer to provide an estimate of the cost of the work.

That proposals be submitted to the ratepayers in the portions of the County recently severed from the Feilding Borough in order to raise a loan to widen the roads and erect the necessary bridges. At the request of Sir Sand Hands, on behalf of property owners at Aorangi, it was resolved that the Minister of Railways he requested to proclaim a portion of the railway reserve for the purpose of a public road and that the member for the district bo requested to interview the Minister with a view of having the request carried into effect.
