The tug Terawhiti and Mana failed to tow off the Taviuni on this morning’s tide as the hawsers parted. The position of the arms indicated that he was drowned while trying to remove his jersey. A fire occurred in the drapery department of the D. 1.0., Dunedin, at 8.15 this morning. The sweepers noticed it and got a hose to work and quickly suppressed the outbreak. The damage from fire and water will amount to a few hundreds, the loss being in the dress, glove and hosiery departments. The cause is not known but it is conjectured that one of the sweepers accidently dropped a match. The German military authorities have decided to establish a station for military airships at Metz, in South Germany, a distance of not quite ten miles from the French frontier. Germany is only following the lead of the French Wrr Office, which some time ago established a similiar station at Verdun, 20 miles from the Franco-German frontier. The ill-fated Patrie began her famous flight from Verdun, and the airship Ville de Paris is now stationed there, and will remain there until the new French airship La Republiquo is ready to take her place. There is reason to believe that the station at Metz is intended to be the first of a chain of stations for military air-ships along the German frontiers.
