At Dunedin Herbert Helm has been committed for trial for alleged theft from a dwelling. The Hawke’s Bay Rifle Association has decided to enter a team for the Empire Cup competition. Webb, the champion sculler, states his desire is to have any match rowed on the Wanganui river. The date of the match with Arnst is pretty well settled for December loth. A woman at Napier yesterday pleaded guilty of perjury during the hearing of a claim against her husband for debt, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. A seven-roomed house at Hamilton was burned this morning. Gall, the tenant, was severely burned in rescuing his little boy. The house svas insured for £550. A movement is on foot in Napier to form a company to erect an up-to-date opera house. The option over a very desirable property in the centre of the town has been obtained. James Ross at Napier Court to-day was admitted to twelve months’ probation on a charge of stealing a horse, saddle and bridle at New Plymouth. As a result of a recent police raid at Wellington five men were charged with playing “two-up.” Martin and Denis Collins and William Mason were fined £5 and costs, and Edward Winter, who did not appear, £7 and costs. The case against another defendant was adjourned. John Ramsey Jones, Jverger of St. Mary’s Church, Timaru, for many years, and captain of the Fixe Brigade for some years, died suddenly this morning. He was engaged in his duties at the church when he was attacked by some fit. He rallied but died whlie walking home. Smart Road Farm, near New Plymouth, on which valuable deposits of kaolin were found some time ago, has been purchased by Mr P. A. Hadley, of Auckland, on behalf of a foreign syndicate which intends starting at once to work the deposits, making the commoner kinds of earthenware at first. The petroleum company which Hadley also represents and which is boring on Carrington Road, has another driller on the way from America, and will start a double shift on his arrival.
