THE AMERICAN FLEET.
THE AUCKLAND VISIT. Per Press Association ' Auckland, April 24. A large and representative meeting of citizens, presided over by the Mayor, was held this afternoon for the purpose of deciding what “steps should be taken to accord a flitting civic reception to the American fleet. The Mayor said that independently of what was done by the Government it behoved the citizens oUAuckland to give the visitors a welcome worthy of the city. On his motion a general committee consisting of the Mayors and Chairmen of other local bodies, together with the members of the City Council and Harbour Board (with power to add to their number) was set up with authority to organise a programme of entertainments, and to appoint sub-committees to assist in carrying out the details of the scheme.
It was stated that ample provision would be made for the entertainment of both officers and men.
A list of suggested functions was read by the Mayor and it was agreed that they be referred to the committee to deal with. The American Consul-General for New Zealand (Mr W. Prickitt) was present, and received an enthusiastic reception on rising to express his willingness to co-operate, as far as possible iu carrying out the objects of the meeting.
