ANARCHIST OUTRAGE IN CHICAGO.

POLICE CHIEF STABBED

New York, March 3

At Chicago this morning the Chief of the Police, Mr George Shippy, was stabbed, and his sou Harry was shot in the left lung, and the family coachman, James Foley, was shot and seriously wounded by an anarchist The latter was then shot, and instantly killed, by the Chief of Police. Foley, although in a critical condition, is expected to recover. Mr Shippy’s son was seriously wounded, the attending physicians say probably fatally. Mr Shippy himself was stabbed in the hand, and his injuries are only slight. The assailant entered the chief’s home while Mr Shippy and his son were alone in the dining room. The man handed the chief a letter, which Mr Shippy tore open and began to read. While he was thus engaged the anarchist drew a revolver and fired point-blank at the chief’s son. The boy fell to the floor unconscious, and the shooting attracted the attention of Foley, who was in the next room. As he ran into the apartment towards the stuggling men, he was the target for the bullets fired by the anarchist. The Chief of Police was so taken by surprise, and the events succeeded each other with such lightning rapidity, that he did not think of himself, but leaped to the side of his unconscious son. As he did so he looked up, to see the barrel of a revolver levelled at him. He seized the anarchist, and after a struggle succeeded in wrestling the weapon from his hand. It was in this struggle that the anarchist drew a knife and cut the chief about the hands. Mr Shippy succeeded in avoiding a mortal wound, and, to save himself, finally drew his own revolver and sent a bullet through the anarchist’s heart. This prompt despatch of a dangerous ruffian is heartily endorsed by Americans generally. Interviewed, Mr Shippy said : “I didn’t like the man’s looks after he handed me the letter. I grabbed his arms, and, forcing them behind his back called my wife. When she ran into the room I said, ‘Mother, see if this man has a revolver! ’ She felt in one of his pockets, and said he had. I tried to hold him with one hand and draw my revolver with the other, but he jerked away and fell against the door. I caught him again, and he fought hard to reach his revolver. My son, aged 21, a student at the Military Academy, must have heard the struggle, and just as he came to my aid the man freed one hand, drew his revolver, and fired two shots at my son. Then Foley ran in and the man shot him. By this time I was able to draw my own revolver. I fired at the man four times. The first two bullets entered his head and the other his body. He fell at the first shot, and I fired three more into him. The attack on Mr Shippy is believed to have been inspired by the recent activity of the Chicago police following the assassination of Father Leo Heinrichs the altar at Denver recently.
