APITI.
From Our Osvn Correspondent,
A grand concert in aid of the public water supply and, the public hall was given on Easter Monday night by the Apiti Comedy Company. They had a bumper house and a most appreciative audience. Numerous encores were given, whilst the impromptu comedy farce entitled “Caretaker of the Public Pump” created vast amusement. The following performers took part:—Misses Lily Guy, Johnstone and Ross, Messrs J. Rule, P. Shirley, H. Stephens, E. Roberts, W. James, H. Robertson and P. Guy, Mr E. Oummerfield acted as interlocutor and Miss Ross played the accompaniments to perfection. Saturday’s rain caused an enormous slip to come down on the Main South Road near the Oroua River. Settlers in the Marten Block can only with great difficulty pass by on horseback. It will be some weeks before vehicluar traffic can be resumed.
Mr J. Rule’s residence had a very narrow escape of. being destroyed by fire on Monday night. On return ng home from the concert, Mrs Rule found that a large hole had been burnt in the floor of the kitchen, where a few embers had been left in the range. Miss Bushel, a lady missionary on furlough from Canton, gave two interesting addresses on mission work in China. Both afternoon and evening services in the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches respectively were well attended on Sunday for this occasion.
