PRODUCE FREIGHTS.
The Railway Department has siipplied our Taihaoe contemporary with a list of freights that will be charged on farm produce, etc., carried over long distances on the Main Trunk Tine. There will, no doubt, be fast mixed trains run to cater for that large section of traffic, for which the through express is scarcely intended. The express train, whoso chief purpose is to carry passengers and mails at a maximum speed, will not tolerate the delays that would he incidental to the extra load and to the time occupied in picking up and setting dowmgoods. That class of traffic will be dealt with by fast mixed trains,' that will carry pasengers and goods at a speed of about twenty miles an hour, stopping where required. Whether such trains will take twenty-four or thirty-six hours to do the entire trip cannot yet be definitely stated. The passenger portion will probably travel by day only, but the cargo may proceed over night by goods trains, thus economising time in transit. To seme extent the possibilities may be gauged by wbat is accomplished on the lines iu the South. Farmers will be able ■to ascertain approximately the freights to be charged from the list here appended, which they will do well to cut out and preserve :
Lime for manuring farm lands is conveyed free up to 100 miles. Where the distance exceeds 100 miles the farmer is charged freight for the distance in excess of the 100 miles. For example: For 150 miles a charge would be made for 50 miles only. To obtain this concession, lime kilns have be to registered with the Railway Department, aud undertake to sell at a price approved by the Railway Department.
