NORTHERN MINING.
A SATISFACTORY CONFERENCE. ' Per Press Association. ' ■ Thames, April 14. A conference of representatives of the mining companies operating in the Thames, Karangahake, and Coromandel districts, and the Thames Miners’ Union (which possesses a large number of .workers in each district) was held to-day, the business being to discuss the conditions, fix the rate of pay to miners and others. The leading companies were represented, the delegates from the Union being the President, Vice-President, and Secretary. The Union asked for an increase in pay for the miners, blacksmiths, and winding engineers. The proceedings were of a most amicable nature, a true spirit of conciliation being shown on both sides. It was unanimously decided to grant increases of wages as under Miners, from Ss to 8s 8d per day; blacksmiths, 9s 6d; winding engineers, 9s to 10s. These are practically the same rates prevailing in other portions of ffthe goldfields where the men are working under the award of the Arbitration Court.
