HIGH' COMMISSIONER ’S REPORT. Per Press Association. Wellington, April 13. The following is the High Commi.“sioner’s cable, dated London, 11 th April, 1908 : The mutton market is quiet and holders are firm. Arrivals ;from all parts sinc n -January Ist show a decrease of 550,000 carcases over the corresponding period of last year. Small shipments are expected. Light weigilts are extremely scarce and a brisk demands prevails. Following are -current quotations: Canterbury mutton North Island River Plate 3%d. There was dull sale for heavy carcases of mutton which 'are quoted as follows ;—Canterbury 3%d, North Island River Plate 3%d. Tiie lamb market is firm. Stocks to hand are light but supply meets demand. Heavy weights can obtain a small premium. Canterbury brands 5%d. other than Canterbury 6%d. The beef market is firm. Stocks of Kew Zealand brands on hand are light. Supplies of River Plate beef are heavy and there is a moderate demand which is purely speculative. Hindquarters B%d, forequarters 3>4'd. The butter market is steady, the best quality being scarce. There is good demand. Choicest New Zealand butter Ills, x\usfcraliau 107 s, Argentine 107 s, Danish 109 s. The cheese market is quiet with a tendency in favour of buyers. White makes 60s, coloured, of which there is a small supply, 62s per 'cwt. The hemp market is rising. There is a better demand. Good fair grade £26 10s, fair grade £25 10s. All positions of the cocksfoot market are quiet and, buyers are not keen on business. Bright clean 171 b seed 80s per cwt. The wool market is depressed, with a weaker downward tendency. Following are current quotations For Bradford tops 36’s low crossbreds 44’s medium crossbreds lid, 50’s halfbreds Is 4d, 56’s quarterbreds Is Bd' BO’s merinos Is lid. STOCK REPORT. Messrs Dalgety & Co.. Ltd., Palmerston North, report having held their usual Maugaweka sale on Saturday, the 11th inst., when they had a very fair yarding of sheep. The principal sales were :—Cull and medium lambs 3s, 2,4, and 6-tooth wethers 10s 9d, mixed age ewes _3s, 2 tooth wethers 9s 5d to 10s.
At Wanganui on Bfch insfc. we yarded 4000 sheep and 200 head of cattle. With the exception of a few pens the quality of the sheep was not good. Competition was dull and a large proportion of the entries was passed under the hammer. We, however, succeeded in making a good clearance after the sale. . The demand for cattle was quiet. At Waverley on 10th inst. we had a good yarding of 3500 sheep and a small yarding of cattle. There was a Large attendance and keen bidding. Prices all round were above Wan-
ganui sale. A line of forward wethers sold on account ’of Mr W. Stoddart made 16a, a record so far for sales on this coast. Quotations :—Wanganui. Medium 2 and 4-tooth wethers 11a 5d to 12s, cull wethers ss, 2-tooth ewes 8s 6d to 10s, old ewes 2s 6d to 4s Id, mixed culls 2-tooths 4s to 6s lOd.fcull iambs 2s 6d, aged rams 7s 6d. Cattle: Fat cows £3 os to £5 4s, forward young steers £3 os, store cows 355, empty 2-year heifers £3, mixed weaners 15s to 16s 6d, veal calves 15s. Waverley. Fat and forward 4-tooth wethers 16s, medium wethers 12s 6d to 13s, small wethers 9s 6d to 10s 3d, 6-tooth to f.f.m. ewes 8s to Ss 9d, cull ewes 4s to os 6d, lambs 5s Id to 6s, 2-tooth Romney rams 2 guineas. Cows and calves £3, store cows poor 225, dairy '’cows £4, store pigs 14s 6d, porkers 25s 6d to 27s 6d.
HEMP MARKET. Messrs Dalgety & Co., Ltd., have received the following cable: — Hemp market firmer. We quote present value of good fair £25 10s to £25 15s. WOOL, SKIN & HIDE SALES. Wellington, April 10. Messrs Murray, Roberts & Co., reportWe offered a small catalogue of wool and sheepskins, and a good offering of hides. There was a large muster of buyers, prices showing a tendency to ease off from last sales rates, for sheepskins and light weight hides. Heavy weight hides showing fair substance were, however, in strong request and sold fully up to late prices. We quote ; Wool: Stragglers fleece rough and seedy 4d to per lb; lambs slightly seedy 4d to 4%d, pieces, etc., ijkjd to 2%d. Loan” & Mercantile report :—A firmer tone was in evidence at today’s sale, but we are unable to report fany material improvement in values. We quote :—Wool: Coarse crossbred inferior to coarse inferior and seedy crossbred 3h£d io 3J, lambs, medium to good to s*£d, lambs crntchings, inferior l%d to 2d.
Messrs Abraham & Williams report :—We offered a fair catalogue to a large atteiulance’of buyers. Prices for everything were ou a par with those ruling at last sales, except light hides which showed a slight decline. We quote: Wool, crossbred' lambs 4?.£d.
