POHANGINA COUNTY COUNCIL.
• The monthly meeting was held on Saturday. Present Crs. Howie (in tho chair), T.. L. Jackson, G. F. Smith, H. Buruo, O. H. Handley, H. W. Oliver. Or. Browne was absent owing to tho illness of his son. Tho inward correspondence was dealt- with as follows From S. A. Wheeler, Pohangma, for permission to carry a fence over the culvert fronting his property. — .Granted. From George Buchanan, Thomas Jeffries. G. N. Cowen. for permission to erect fence along edge of ior‘ination fronting their sections. Granted. From Hospital .and Charitable Am Board, uotifving levy of 4s 6d, the Council being liable for fil»s 11s and 14s towards cost of Infectious Disease Hospital. From B. Baker, asking Council to spend mouev due on Baker’s road, iu-metalling it. If that were done he would make the road on his side of the mill free -of cost to the Council.—The Engineer stated there was about £3O of thirds available, was needed to keep the drams open. Bo other funds were available. Or. Brown and the Engineer to inspect the road and report. From Jo.hu Carrie, Dtnwai. asking tho Council to postpone the appointment of ranger in ins locality, because many of the fences destroyed oy recen' tires !;ri not yet noon reerected.—Duties cf ranger not to commence until .1 nun Ist. Balruer and ID others, drawing attention to the dangerous state of Denton’s hill cutting, and asking that it bo fenced, -A letter was receiver! from F. O. Boss stating that Mr J. Bruce would pay half cost and provide tho necessary posts. —Consideration deferred until next meeting, owing to tho absence cf tho Chairman. The Treasurer reported the balances ■ at tho bank wore.: —General fond, dr. £3301 fe 10:1; Loan account, cr. £823 On Id. Riding accounts, A wall ott, cr. £173 os id ; 3x.ingaoae, cr. £lB7 11s O-.l; Coal Creek, dr. £24 2s 1 On ; Hangapiknpiko. dr. £1" 8s Gd ; Poh angina',' dr. £IOO Gy 4u ; Tamaki, dr. £BOO ICs lid ; Umutoi, dr. £073 11s sd. Tiie accounts to bs submitted for payment amounted to £oSO Is 4d, being £-140 15s il l from general fund, and £ 14'.-) os ocl from loan account. Of the rates collectable £3,148 7s ocl, there was but £2B 7s 7d due, and from one ratepayer. The Engineer reported that it would be necessary to widen the top road opposite the Pohangiua bridge site, and it should be done as soon as possible. Mr Kouuth waite and be liad visited the bridge site and the battering of the top slip is to be taken in hand as soon as possible. The tender of Mr E. Bald ?afc 3s for breaking 500 yards of metal in the Mangapikcpiko riding had been accepted. He still advised the appointment of a ranger for Apiti township. B. Guy had done considerable damage to the footpath, by driving his dray across it. The Mca road from the Main road to the river had been metalled. "Weather permitting the filling at tho Opawa bridge would be completed about the end of the month. Messrs Gheyne and Grammar had completed their metalling contract on the Apiti-Horsewood road. They would complete their job on the Makiekie road about the end of nest week aud he recommended that they be given an extension of time to the 34th inst. —lt was decided to notify B. Guv that proceedings will be taken against him in case he again damages the footpath. Or. Burne aud the Engineer were
authorised to employ a man as ranger for Apiti, and to be a general“mspector. The Engineer was directed to proceed with the erection of the cage at the Piripiri ford. LONDON’S FORD BRIDGE. The Chairman reported that he
and Or. Smith had met the representatives of the Kiwitea County Council last Saturday, and discussed the erection of a bridge at London’s ford. The agreement come to was, that the County Councils should ap--ply to Government for a subsidy of —£ for £, it being understood that the Pohangina Council pay three quarters part of the balance required and the Kiwitea Oonnty Council one quarter, and that a deputation of the two Councils proceed to Wellington as early as possible to apply for the subsidy.—The report was adopted. | Crs. Smith and the Chairman were appointed to represent the Council on the proposed denutation. . GENERAL BUSINESS.
Cr. JBurne reported that lie had arranged with the Engineer to do part of the work asked for by the Secretary of the Apiti Presbyterian Church.
It was resolved that Mr Rouutbwaite be asked to fix a definite date, in his specifications of the contract for the erection of Pohangina bridge, for the delivery of the timber, at which date the contract time shall be deemed to have commenced. That tenders ho called for metalling the Awa road.
That applications for the position of ranger be called by next meeting, for the Awahon, Taraaki, Mangaone,Pohangina, Coal Creek, Manga - pikopiko and Umutoi ridings, the duty to commence on June Ist. Cr. Howie said be bad conferred with the Manager of the Sash and Door Company’s Mill and obtained a promise of a contribution towards the cost of repairing the Mahiekieroad but be now feared the promise would not be fulfilled, now Foot and Roberts had cut out at the Piripiri and proposed shifting their mill to Utuwai, and in that case there was the timber for a second mill to be carried along the Makiekie read. It, was impossible to keep the road in repair out of the funds of the riding, and the only course he could advise was to give Foot and Roberts notice that they would not be allowed to carry timber over this or Makcura road, unless they made a deposit of £SOO.—A motion was passed to the above effect.
And it was also resolved that tlie Palmerston Sash and Door Company be informed that unless they metal the flat at Piripivi ford at once,
action will be taken against them for damage done to road. The chairman said if no uoticewas taken of the motion the council’s solicitor would he directed to take action. It was resolved that this Council endorse the action of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce in requesting tho Government to make Feilding a stopping place for the Main Trunk express.
