THE POET’S CORNER.
“HELP! HELP 1” Mamie’s in the factory, Annie’s in the store, Bridget will not worry With housework any more. Mollie’s in a sweet-shop, Kate’s a manicure; No one scrubs or washes Wages are no lure. Maggie’s an apprentice, Flossie’s making mats, And that is why we’re living, Most of us, in flats. —Puck,
AT CHURCH. Aunt Susan thought the church was fine; And Uncle Bob the preaching; But Cousin May had much to say About the tenor’s screeching; While Tom and Dick grew almost sick From scrapping o’er the alto; And loving JSled quite lost his head Admiring the contralto; But more impressed than all the rest Beamed little three-year Benny; “They passed some money round,” said he, “But I only took a penny.” —John A. Simpson.
