AUSTRALIAN STRIKE.
A SETTLEMENT REACHED. per Press "Association. —CopyrightSydney, April 11. The only point precluding a settlement yesterday was in connection with the Maxchaut Service Guild. This was arranged to-day, r when agreements were signed and ratified by both parties. The, coastal steamers resume running forthwith. The settlement provides for the coastal companies to carry out their agreement with the men on during the strike, those formerly employed to return as opportunity offers; the HeWcastle company to have the right to retain their present employees ,at Newcastle and Morpeth, provided . coastal rates are paid in lieu of a weekly wage; preference to Unionists to operate after the present employees have joined the Union or left the Company’s employ. The engineers agree that the coastal owners may run, at their ’discretion, not more than six steamers, divided between the three fleets, with engineers not exceeding twelve. The remainder of the steamers must be manned solely by members f of the Institute of Marine Engineers, •tfho will also have preference in future vacancies; none of the present engineers’ employees to be Retained after the termination of the present agreements. The Merchant Service Guild stipu- - lated that ail steamers now out of commission shall be manned by members of the Guild, who are also to fill vacancies as they occur. The agreement fixes the number of permanent hands at the various ; wharves.
