HUNTERVILLE.

From Our Own Correspondent,

I see a largely-signed requisition for Mr Guthrie of Kawhatau to stand for Rangitikei has been going around. I also hear it is doubtful if Mr Guthrie will accede to the request. At the meeting of ratepayers held to night the Rev. J. Blackburne, who was voted the chair, introduced the water and drainage scheme in a few well-chosen words. Mr Mair after animadverting on what had been said regarding his being financially interested in the proposed scheme, stated that his office as engineer and adviser was purely with the wish of forwarding the interests of the town and a gratuitous one. ( Applause.) Mr McManaway then invited those against the scheme to come forward. Mr Mair, in reply to a query re maintenance and cost, said that the cost would be small. The same speaker quoted Dr. Valentine re septic tanks and showed the value of same. Marton Borough with a smaller population, had spent more than twice the sum asked. Mr Bowick asked as regards the extension of scheme. Mr Mair replied satisfactorily and pointed out the danger of insufficient drainage, even to those who were living on sections which did not ‘.apparently require to fall in with the general view. One present confessed after hearing the views that he was converted. Mr Mair explained the finance and how lightly it would bear on the ratepayers. After several questions had been satisafctorily answered Mr Meldrum, who arrived rather late,on the scene, gave an address that was very patiently listened to. Dr. Smith spoke, insisting on the necessity of a water supply. A vote of thanks was given ‘Mr Mair for data and explanations given and the meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
