A GIRL’S STORY.
DISBELIEVED BY MAGISTRATE., Press Association, Auckland, April 9. Mr Kettle, S.M., gave his reserved decision this morning in the case against Richard Dyason, chief officer of the sterner Navua, charged with having on Sunday evening, March 29th, attempted a criminal assault on Florence Callaghan, aged 23. The Magistrate said t'<u girl’s story as to Dyason having dragged her to his cabin struggling and resisting was quite beyond credit, the night being calm and nothing to prevent cries of distress being heard by many people near the vessel. If pier evidence so far was so grossly exaggerated no jury of reasonable men would he justified in accepting her statement as to what took place in the mate’s cabin. She bore no sign of a struggle and absolutely refused to submit to medical examination* The case was dismissed.
