BAGS OF BULLION.
There were remarkable scenes in the Italian quarter of New York, where an attempt was made to blow up one of the large banks used by the poorer class of foreigners. The culprits, whose object was clearly to raid the bank during the confusion, placed a bomb under one of the windows and decamped. The explosion knocked half the wall into the street. Near the window were hags containing bullion to the value of over £IOOO. The money was scattered in the roadway. No one was injured. Scores of policemen were soon on thegspot, and all the money was recovered. The entire population turned out panic-stricken. The rumour spread that the hank had been cleaned out, and hundreds of small depositors rushed about the streets frantically. At one time there were about 10,000 Italians around the bank demanding their money. Their situation became so serious that the police reserves had to he called out, and even then order was not restored for many hours.
