As a result of the extensive nature of ploughing operations in North Otago at the present time there is a greater demand for horses than has been the case for two years. Prices are at a boom scale. A recent sale was declared the finest ever held in the district.

On the Marton Bowling green yesterday a challenge match for the Advocate feathers was played and after a good game, the present holders won on the last head by one point. The defenders were Messrs H. Sutcliffe . (skip)," A. Sharpe, Hold away, and T. O. Trott, and the challengers were Messrs J. A. Bell (skip), J. McEldowney, R. H, Carey, and A. W. Woolley. The green was in heavy condition. The annual meeting of Marton Youths’ was held in St. Stephen’s' schoolroom last evening. Mr L. Dahl was in the chair. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The report showed that ten meetings had been held last quarter, all of which were well attended. The balance-sheet showed a substantial credit balance and there was promise of a very satisfactory year. It was decided to call a'committee meeting when the business for the "year will be gone into. Officers elected wore: President, Yen. Archdeacon Towgood; secretary, L, Dahl; treasurer, A. Humphrey. A strong committee was formed.

A middle-aged woman named Mary Schofield, who was asked at Police Court to show cause why a prohibi" tion order should not be issued against her, indignantly challenged the right of the Court to take away the liberty of a freeborn American citizen. “If the order were issued she would take no notice of it,” she said; “in fact, she would put in on the fire.” Undeterred, however, Mr Kettle, S.M., made an order against defendant for 12 months. On the order being made out and handed to the woman, she immediately tore it in pieces, and threw the pieces in the direction of the magistrate. Mr Kettle severeyl admonished her, and ordered her to be detained for gross contempt of Court. He also ordered her to gather up the fragments that remained. This was [reluctantly done, and defendant, after having the gravity of [her position pointed out to her, wa,s allowed to go, taking with her the order in its reduced state. John Fishlock, Inglewood, Yic. writes:—“Last winter I contracted a very severe cold, for which I tried nearly every medicine under the sun without obtaining the slightest relief.
