The Federal Government has received a reply to the cable despatched to London that the canned meat reported as re-shipped to America was stock withdrawn by the Admiralty, Government having sold the surplus old stock at low prices. The Minister *of Customs says the facts do not disclose any additional opening for Australian preserved meats.

The Senate has reduced the duty on pianos from 30 and 25 per cent, to 25 and 20 per cent., the second figure in each case being the preferential rate for British made pianos. New York, April 1.
Reuter’s New York correspondent says that the colliery owners in various parts of the United States intend to close their mines, pending an agreement as to the scale of wages. The closing will throw a quarter of a million men idle.
