A PATHETIC CASE.
Per Press Association. Auckland, April 1. A young woman, named May" Curtin, appeared before Mr Kettle, S.M., at the Police Court to-day on: various charges of theft. A pathetic story was unfolded. Accused is an orphan, and came out as an immigrant to take a position as lady help in an Auckland family, but a fellow immigrant induced her on arrival to live with him as his wife. Shortly afterwards he deserted her and she 'i went to the Thames as a barmaid, subsequently going to Napier. Mr Singer, who appeared for the girl, made an appeal for her to be handed over to friends, who were anxious to look after her, and where she would be free from those who had ruined her. The Magistrate : “Would to God I had power to deal with the men who have ruined bar.” He added that he would decide as to what should be done with the girl. Perhaps it would behest to hand her over to the Door of Hope if room could be. 'j made for her.
