A gas explosion at the Union Pacific Coal Mine, Wyoming, killed two people and a second explosion entombed 70 who were trying to secure the bodies of the dead. It is feared that all have been smothered by after-damp. Sydney, March 30. The prisoner Kirk, who was awaiting trial for the Broken Hill murder (cabled on February 18th) hanged himself'to-day in his cell by the aid of a blanket. He left a note stating that he tried to bleed himself to death but failed. There was a slight wound on the arm. London, March 30.
A hundred thousand old believers, who settled in Roumania, and others who settled in Austria and the Balkans, desire to return to Russia now that freedom of conscience has been proclaimed. They will probably resettle in the Amur territory.
