The painters’ strike is extending, and 750 men are idle. A few firms have conceded the demands. The wharf labourers’ strike conference was continued to-day, and after an adjournment the Press representatives weie informed that the position was not any more critical than yesterday. A definite statement as to whether there will be peace or an indefinite continuation ox the struggle will probably bo given to-morrow afternoon T reason to believe, however. the position is somewhat improved. The Deep Sea Stevedores’ Association has issued summonses against 14 members of the Wharf Labourers’ Union for breaches of the award.
THE EFFECT ON SHIPPING. Received March 35, 10.37 a.m. Sydney, March 25. Thirty-five steamers arc *’laid up as the result of the coastal strike.
